About this attraction

Murchison is one of the easiest Uganda parks to understand: game drives on the northern bank, a Nile launch to the falls, and strong value for travelers who want wildlife without a very complex route.

Highlights

  • The top-of-falls viewpoint and the Nile compressed through the gorge
  • Boat safari to the base with hippos, crocodiles, and riverbank wildlife
  • Northern-bank drives for giraffe, elephant, buffalo, lion, and Uganda kob
  • Delta birding toward Lake Albert, including the possibility of shoebill

How to get there

Drive north from Entebbe or Kampala, or fly to Pakuba or Bugungu and transfer into a lodge near the river or the northern game-drive circuit.

Best time to visit

Dryer months concentrate wildlife and simplify game drives, but the boat excursion remains rewarding throughout the year.

Practical information

Plan activities by river bank and departure point; unnecessary crossings consume wildlife-viewing time. Dry months generally improve roads and concentrate game, while the river remains productive year-round. Visitors commonly praise the boat approach and force of the falls, with heat, long drives, and changing road conditions the main cautions.

Full description

Murchison is Uganda’s largest national park, where the Victoria Nile is forced through a narrow rock gorge before dropping into the Rift Valley. The classic visit combines northern-bank game drives with a boat journey to the base of the falls, where hippos, crocodiles, elephants, buffalo, and waterbirds gather. A delta cruise toward Lake Albert is especially attractive for birders seeking shoebill.
