Murchison Falls National Park

Murchison Falls brings together two different safari experiences: time on the Nile and drives through the surrounding wildlife landscape. The waterfall gives the park its name, but a good itinerary also leaves room for the quieter river margins, open country and changing birdlife. It is best approached as a stay of several nights rather than a race from Kampala to a single viewpoint. Choosing accommodation in relation to your boat departure, game-drive area and entry route makes a tangible difference to how much of each day is spent experiencing the park rather than transferring across it.

What it is

The Nile is the organizing feature of a Murchison visit. Viewing the falls from above and taking a boat outing provide different perspectives, while game drives allow visitors to explore away from the river. These activities should be planned as separate experiences with their own schedules and meeting points; a boat trip does not automatically include every walking route or viewpoint.

Our recommended structure is an arrival day with a manageable short stop, a full day combining a morning drive with a prearranged boat excursion, and another flexible morning before departure. A longer Uganda itinerary can continue towards the western parks, but it is worth resisting a sequence of one-night stays. Ask your guide about current road access and how the accommodation's location affects daily routing, rather than relying on a generic park map.

How to get there

Arrange the approach from Kampala/Entebbe or another Uganda destination around the lodge and the gate you will use. UWA distinguishes transit arrangements from visitor entry, so do not assume that driving through part of the park covers an activity visit. For a fly-in stay, obtain the airstrip name and confirmed lodge transfer. Request a current transfer estimate rather than treating older brochure times as a guarantee.

Best time

UWA identifies June–August and December–February as generally favorable dry periods for savannah wildlife viewing. River excursions and tracks remain subject to local conditions. Ask about recent rainfall and boat operation close to departure; photography, birding and quieter travel may lead you to choose a different month from peak safari demand.

Planning notes

Check boat departure times and whether the guide has reserved places. Allocate separate time for the top-of-falls visit and ask whether any proposed walk is currently operating. Agree what happens if weather changes an activity. Compare stays by their relationship to your planned drives and boat landing, and confirm meals, vehicle use and park fees. Wildlife sightings remain unpredictable even on well-planned routes.
