Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

What it is

The main draw is a ranger-led encounter with habituated mountain gorillas. Uganda Wildlife Authority identifies Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga and Nkuringo as the principal trekking sectors. These are different starting areas, not interchangeable entrances to a single short walking circuit. Standard tracking and specialist habituation products should also be distinguished when checking a booking.

The forest deserves more than an overnight stop arranged around a permit. Confirm the sector named on your permit before arranging a road transfer or domestic flight. Ask the lodge to specify the correct arrival airstrip, final road approach and transfer arrangement; an airport-to-Bwindi quote without a sector is not sufficiently precise. Overland itineraries can combine the forest with western Uganda, but use a dedicated transfer day rather than assuming that a map's driving estimate leaves time for an afternoon activity.

Best time

UWA identifies June–August and December–February as generally favorable drier periods for primate tracking. This remains rainforest: rain, slippery ground and variable walking conditions are possible in every month. Prioritize permit availability and a workable sector-based itinerary over promises of a completely dry trek.
